PM Modi on Nikos Christodoulides: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (February 13) congratulated Nicos Christodoulides on being elected as the new President of Cyprus. PM Modi said that he is looking forward to working with Cyprus to enhance India’s relations with Cyprus. Former foreign minister Christodoulides was elected the new president of Cyprus in Sunday’s election. His rival, veteran diplomat Andres Mavroyiannis, conceded defeat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Congratulations to His Excellency Nikos Christodoulides on being elected President of Cyprus. I look forward to working closely with him to enhance India-Cyprus relations.” Al Ajira reported that 49-year-old Nikos Christodoulides defeated fellow diplomat Andres Mavrouianis with 51.9 percent of the vote compared to 48.1 percent on the divided Mediterranean island.

‘We couldn’t achieve that change…’
“Tonight a journey has come to an end, a great journey that I shared with thousands of people. I am sorry that we could not achieve the change that Cyprus needed,” 66-year-old Mavrouiannis told reporters. Prior to the election results, Christodoulides said that “the people of Cyprus know and understand what is at stake. I have full confidence in their decision.”
British High Commissioner congratulated
British High Commissioner in Cyprus Irfan Siddique tweeted his congratulations to the newly elected President Christodoulides. He wrote, “Congratulations and best wishes to President-elect @Christodulides! #UKCYties are long, strong and important to the UK and its people. I look forward to supporting you and your team in our bilateral and Commonwealth partnership and your efforts on the Cyprus Settlement.” I look forward to working.”
