Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif Will Appoint Syed Asim Muneer As New Pakistan Army Chief In The Place Of General Aseem Bajwa ANN
Pakistan New Army Chief: Amidst the ongoing political upheaval in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has announced the appointment of Asim Munir as the new army chief of Pakistan. The special thing is that this is the same Asim Munir, who was removed from the post of ISI Chief in the year 2019 by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. In such a situation, it is believed that in the coming days, Imran Khan’s street performance may increase.
On Thursday (November 24), Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Maryam Aurangzeb tweeted that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir as the new army chief. Apart from this, it has been decided to appoint Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
Had bad relations with Imran Khan
Asim Munir was currently posted as the Quarter Master General of the Pakistan Army. Prior to this, he was the commander of the 30th Corps of the Pakistan Army based in Gujranwala, which is stationed along the borders close to India’s Punjab, but Aasim Munir was in the limelight when in June 2019, the then Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed him as the head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency. He was shown the way out from the post of DG of ISI within just 8 months. However, for what reasons he was removed and made Corps Commander, it was not told. It was believed that he was removed due to bad relations with Imran Khan. Munir will replace the current Pakistan Army Chief General Bajwa, who is retiring on 29th of this month. General Bajwa is already facing opposition from Imran Khan.
Munir was the chief of ISI
In February 2019, India carried out the Balakot air strike in Pakistan while Munir was holding the post of ISI chief. Since the Balakot strike, Asim Munir had become a thorn in the side of Imran Khan. Ever since he was removed from the post of Prime Minister, Imran Khan has waged a war against the Pakistan Army. Imran Khan is protesting against the interference of Pakistani army in politics. In such a situation, Imran Khan can be further agitated if Munir becomes the army chief. However, the current Army Chief General Bajwa has issued his clarification regarding Imran Khan’s allegations. The tension between the army and Imran Khan in Pakistan does not seem to be ending soon. In such a situation, Imran Khan can soon start his Rawalpindi march once again.
President’s approval is necessary for army chief
There is another doubt regarding the appointment of Asim Munir and that is the approval of his name by the President. In fact, the present President of Pakistan Arif Alvi is considered close to Imran Khan. Shahbaz Sharif government needs to get the green signal from the President to appoint Asim Munir as the chief of the Pakistan Army, if this does not happen then there can be a constitutional crisis in Pakistan along with an earthquake in both military and politics.
