Myanmar Frees Ex-British Ambassador, Australian Advisor And Japanese Journalist

National Day Of Myanmar: 700 prisoners will be released on the occasion of National Day in Myanmar. These include former British ambassador Vicky Bowman, Australian economics consultant Sean Turnell and Japanese journalist Toru Kubota. Myanmar media informed about this on Thursday (November 17). According to the report, a decision has been taken to release these prisoners on the occasion of National Day. Those being released have been granted amnesty.

All these prisoners were detained for inciting the public during last year’s coup. Vicky Bowman, who served as the ambassador from 2002 to 2006. She was detained along with her husband in August. Bowman was charged with immigration violations and Kubota with sedition and violating the Communications Act, after which he was sentenced to a year in prison. If reports are to be believed, her husband, leading artist Hetin Lin, will also be released.

Release of Australian economist Sean Turnell

Aung San Suu Kyi’s adviser and Australian economist Sean Turnell was detained shortly after the coup in February last year, after which, in September, he and Suu Kyi were found guilty of violating the Official Secrets Act by a closed junta court. While staying, he was sentenced to three years. In addition, 26-year-old Japanese journalist Toru Kubota was detained in July along with two Myanmar nationals near an anti-government rally in Yangon and jailed for 10 years.
